Maryland SoccerPlex and Discovery Sports Center July 2015 Preview  

Independence Day fireworks, summer camps, tournaments, women's professional soccer headline July schedule

 

Boyds, MD (July 1, 2015) - Lacrosse tournaments, summer camps, women's professional soccer, numerous summer sports leagues and Independence Day fireworks make up a busy month of July at the Maryland SoccerPlex and Discovery Sports Center.

Dual Sports Camp
June 29-July 3
Location: Discovery Sports Center
Boys ages 7-13 are participating in a five-day basketball and football camp at the Discovery Sports Center this week leading into the 4th of July. +More Information

Fun For All, All for Fun Camp
June 29-July 3, July 6-10, July 13-17, July 20-24
Location: Complex Wide
One of the SoccerPlex & Discovery Sports Center's most popular summer camps, 'Fun For All, All for Fun' offers a wide range of sports including basketball, soccer, flag football, dodgeball, kickball, relay races and other activities including field trips to the Splash Park, Mini Golf & Driving Range, all located within the South Germantown Recreational Park.

Performance Lacrosse Summer League
July 1, 8, 15, 22 & 29
Location: SoccerPlex Turf Fields
Teams competing in the Performance Lacrosse Summer League will play at the SoccerPlex throughout July and the remainder of the summer. Varsity and Junior Varsity levels will play seven-game summer seasons as part of the organization's year-round schedule.

Summer Bump, Set, Drink Volleyball
July 2, 9, 16, 23 & 30
Location: Discovery Sports Center
The Summer session of 'Bump, Set, Drink Volleyball', a Discovery Sports Center staple, kicks off its regular season on July 2 and runs throughout the month. The playoffs begin exactly a month later on August 2, ending with the Finals on August 20. +More Information 

Germantown Glory Fireworks
July 4 (9:15 p.m.)
Location: South Germantown Recreational Park
Montgomery County will again host two Independence Day fireworks displays on July 4 , one of which is the annual Germantown Glory Fireworks at the Maryland SoccerPlex in the South Germantown Recreational Park, which will start at approximately 9:15 pm on Saturday, July 4. The night will kick off at 7:00 pm with a concert by the Tina Turner Revue featuring Suzette Dorsey. +More Information

Bradley Beal Basketball Camp
July 6-8
Location: Discovery Sports Center
Washington Wizards all-star shooting guard Bradley Beal is hosting a summer basketball camp at the Discovery Sports Center from July 6-8. Campers will have a unique opportunity to learn from and team up with Bradley Beal, and receive instruction in a setting with a 10:1 camper to instructor ratio, a daily emphasis on basketball fundamental development, character development, team play and more. All campers will receive an autograph from Beal, a camp t-shirt, be part of a camp team photo with Beal and have a chance to win prizes and giveaways. +More Information

Club National Championship (CNC) Lacrosse Tournament (Girls only)
July 9-12
Location: SoccerPlex
One of the region's premier showcase tournaments provides attending teams with top notch fields, elite officiating, college recruitment opportunities and championship brackets. All teams will have four guaranteed games,which includes at least three pool play games and one playoff game. +More Information

Maryland Flames July Basketball Tournaments
July 11-12, 25-26
Location: Discovery Sports Center
Boys and girls travel basketball teams ranging from 3rd grade all the way to 12th grade age groups will play three games each at the Maryland Flames Red, White & Blue Basketball Tournament from July 11-12. One of several summer events hosted by the Flames, one of Maryland's most prevalent travel basketball organizations, the event offers both A and B level competition. The Flames host their annual Patriot Games Basketball Tournament at the Discovery Sports Center as well from July 25-26.

Mighty Mites Mini Camp
July 13-17, July 20-24
Location: Discovery Sports Center
This popular camp offers 8 weeks of summer fun for children ages 3-4. Each camp is set up as a half-day where children spend 3 hours enjoying sports, playground games, reading and a variety of theme worlds such as "Dinosaur World", "Down by the Sea", "Out of this World" and "To the Circus We Go" among others. +More Information

Gilchrist Zanni Volleyball Camp
July 13-17 
Location: Discovery Sports Center
Girls from age 11 all the way through incoming high school seniors have the opportunity to train with longtime coaches Scott Zanni and Bonnie Gilchrist, refining their skills for the upcoming season. Both Zanni and Gilchrist are accomplished high school varsity volleyball coaches, played collegiate volleyball and have years of experience teaching volleyball. They run their programs with a primary goal of delivering high quality instruction in the game of volleyball at a low cost, and in a fun and enjoyable atmosphere.

Basketball Clinics Session III Begins
July 14 
Location: Discovery Sports Center
The Discovery Sports Center's summer edition of its Youth Basketball Clinic series starts on July 14 and runs through September 2. Players ranging from ages 5-8 and 9-12 can work on their skills and receive high level training from experienced local coaches dedicated to instilling the fundamentals of basketball from an early age. Players get eight sessions in which they can focus on the building blocks of becoming the best they can be in the sport. +More Information

FLG in 3D Summer Shootout Lacrosse Tournament (Boys only)
July 17-19 
Location: SoccerPlex
Two of the country's premier lacrosse clubs, 3d Lacrosse (CO) and For the Love of the Game - FLG (NY), have joined forces to present the FLG IN 3D Summer Shootout Lacrosse Tournament that will take place at the SoccerPlex in late July. Top club teams from different regions of the country will spend a weekend competing against each other in a high-level tournament that will include college coaches from Divisions I, II and III, All-Star Games in each division, a vendor village, and a quality tournament in beautiful surroundings. +More Information

Location: Maureen Hendricks Field
Riding a three-game unbeaten streak, the Washington Spirit continue the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) regular season this month with two home matches at Maureen Hendricks Field. The Spirit face the talented Seattle Reign and Chicago Red Stars on July 18 and 25 respectively. Crystal Dunn, who leads the Spirit with 7 goals, netted her latest in a 1-0 win over the Houston Dash on June 27. Washington travels to face FC Kansas City on July 3 before returning for the homestand. +More Information

SAM Soccer Camp
July 20-24 & July 27-31
Location: SoccerPlex
Nationally licensed coaches will be on hand at the SAM Soccer Camp to teach passing, dribbling, shooting and other skills for boys and girls soccer players age 6-16. Players are grouped into teams by age and ability, and are kept together throughout the week to maximize teamwork and development. The camp features full and half day options and has an excellent player-to-coach ratio. +More Information

Soccer/Tennis Camp
July 20-24 & July 27-31 
Location: SoccerPlex & Montgomery TennisPlex
Multi-talented athletes will participate in this year's Soccer/Tennis Camp sessions, hosted by the SoccerPlex and Montgomery TennisPlex in Germantown. It is offered to boys and girls ages 6-16 and includes soccer games and instruction during the morning, and tennis in the afternoon. +More Information 

Golden Goal Soccer Camp
July 20-24
Location: SoccerPlex
Golden Goal Soccer Academy is hosting its summer instructional camp at the SoccerPlex once again. Since its inception in 1998, the Academy has helped develop soccer skill, self-esteem and confidence in young athletes. Golden Goal is celebrating its 17th anniversary and includes a staff composed of "A" Licensed coaches, former Division I college players, State Champion high school and youth club coaches, high level college coaches and more.

Barcelona Soccer Camp
July 20-24 & July 27-31
Location: SoccerPlex
FC Barcelona, one of the world's most prestigious soccer clubs, is again holding camp for girls and boys ages 6-14 ranging from Recreational, Competitive and Academy skill levels. The camp includes five full days of training from a highly experienced staff, as well as three goalkeeper training sessions which focus on foot skill exercises, drills involving shooting with a group and in game simulations daily. +More Information 

Coerver Soccer Camp
July 27-31 
Location: SoccerPlex
Advanced level soccer players 10 years of age and up will learn the Coerver Method, one of the world's most technically-advanced styles of soccer training. The Coerver Advanced level teaches more complicated moves and swiftly puts players into competitive environments with an emphasis on 1v1 and 2v2 play in the morning. The importance of fast transition play is stressed and players are encouraged to play creatively and freely and to use their new skills in games. Players are also put in many situations requiring decision-making as that is a key ingredient to advanced play. The camp is five full days at the SoccerPlex. +More Information 

Steve Blake Basketball Camp
July 27-31 
Location: Discovery Sports Center
Current NBA player and former University of Maryland star Steve Blake returns to the Discovery Sports Center for his annual summer basketball camp. Boys and girls ages 6-16 get the chance to work with Blake and his knowledgeable staff which includes NBA personnel and more. Along with valuable training, contests, and awards for team and individual achievements, campers get an autograph session with Blake and a free camp t-shirt. +More Information

The Maryland SoccerPlex (www.mdsoccerplex.org - 18031 Central Park Circle, Boyds, MD 20841) features 22 professionally maintained, regulation-sized soccer fields. The SoccerPlex offers a combination of playing surfaces with 11 Kentucky bluegrass fields, 7 Bermuda grass fields, 3 synthetic turf fields with lights and an award-winning Kentucky bluegrass stadium field with lights and permanent bleacher seating.

The SoccerPlex hosts youth leagues, adult leagues, youth tournaments, NCAA Division I college matches and conference championships (ACC), U.S. Open Cup matches (D.C. United), professional women's matches (Washington Spirit) and a variety of international teams and competitions.
