Maryland SoccerPlex and Discovery Sports Center September 2015 Preview

Playoff-bound Washington Spirit, youth basketball and soccer fall kickoffs headline September schedule

Boyds, MD (September 3, 2015) - The Washington Spirit have clinched a playoff berth and could host a National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) semifinal match at the Maryland SoccerPlex on September 13, following their regular season home finale on September 5 against league-leading Seattle Reign FC. As the Spirit close out their season, youth soccer and basketball also ramps up at the SoccerPlex and Discovery Sports Center this month, with the Rush For The Cup Tournament, the start of SAM Soccer, Maryland Flames AAU basketball and much more.

Bump, Set, Drink Volleyball

September 3, 10, 17, 24
Location: Discovery Sports Center

The Summer session of 'Bump, Set, Drink Volleyball', a Discovery Sports Center staple, has wrapped up and the fall season is set to begin. The preseason continues on September 3 followed by the start of the regular season on September 10, and continuing throughout the month. Wait list registration is still open for a limited time leading up to the start of the regular season.

Rush for the Cup

September 5-6 | Schedule
Location: SoccerPlex

Rush for the Cup, now an official qualifier for the prestigious Generation Adidas Bethesda Premier Cup, is entering its third year of play. The event, hosted by Alliance Soccer Club, Maryland Rush Montgomery and the SoccerPlex, is a part of the tournament series established by the united local soccer community. The 2014 event featured over 100 teams in its second year, and has grown to 132 squads set to participate in the third edition. The event features teams from the Under-10 age group to Under-19.

Montgomery College Tom Bichy Soccer Tournament
September 5-6
Location: SoccerPlex Field 3

The 2015 Tom Bichy Soccer Tournament kicks off this weekend with Montgomery College men's soccer vs. Camden County College at 1 p.m., on Saturday, September 5. Following the conclusion of the first game, Prince George's Community College will take on Nassau Community College at 3:30 p.m. Day two will feature the host Montgomery College against Nassau at 11:45 a.m. The tournament will wrap up with Prince George's Community College playing Camden County College at 2:30 p.m.

Last Washington Spirit NWSL Regular Season Home Game
September 5 (7 p.m.) vs. Seattle Reign FC | Sold Out
Location: Maureen Hendricks Field

Led by National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) leading goal scorer Crystal Dunn and Team USA players Ali Krieger and Ashlyn Harris, the Washington Spirit have clinched a spot in the NWSL playoffs for a second straight season. The third place Spirit play their final home match of the regular season against first place Seattle Reign FC on Saturday, September 5. The star-studded match, which will also feature USA stars Hope Solo and Megan Rapinoe, is officially sold out.

Start of Fall SAM League

September 11-13
Location: SoccerPlex

The Soccer Association of Montgomery (SAM) Fall League begins on Friday, September 11 as local Select and Rec teams get to put the skills they developed over the summer on display. From Under-7 all the way through high school age groups, this will be one of the most widely attended SAM seasons to date.

Suburban Maryland Home Show
September 12-13
Location: Discovery Sports Center

Suburban Maryland Home Show events are designed for homeowners who are in all stages of remodeling, landscaping and decorating their homes. Each event includes home improvement and remodeling exhibits with product demonstrations and sample interior and exterior vignettes. Exhibitors provide interactive experiences designed to stimulate creativity and goals for home improvement plans. Show-only deep discounts are available, providing a fantastic opportunity to shop, compare and save all under one roof.

Start of Fall Pre-Kicks and Kickers classes
September 12
Location: SoccerPlex

Young soccer players from ages 3-4 and 5-6 have the tremendous opportunity to participate in Pre-Kicks and Kickers classes, where they can learn the fundamentals of the game that they will utilize for the rest of their careers. The fall schedule for Pre-Kicks and Kickers classes includes eight weekly sessions throughout the season. Pre-Kicks (Ages 3-4) sessions are held seven days a week, allowing families to choose a day and timeslot that fits into their schedule. Kickers (Ages 5-6) classes are held on five days out of the week, also allowing for a great deal of flexibility.

Potential Washington Spirit NWSL Semifinal
September 13
Location: Maureen Hendricks Field

With a place in the playoffs already secured, the Spirit is fighting for a home semifinal match. The Spirit must win against Seattle in their final regular season match in order to have a chance to host a semifinal at the SoccerPlex. The top two teams in the league will host a semifinal, and Seattle Reign FC has already locked up one of them. The battle for the second is between the Spirit and the Chicago Red Stars. Chicago currently has the edge on the Spirit, and if Chicago wins its final match against the Houston Dash on Sunday, it will host the second semifinal. If the Spirit win against Seattle and Chicago loses or draws against Houston, the Spirit will move into 2nd place in the standings and host a semifinal match. If the Spirit hosts a semifinal, Chicago will be coming to the SoccerPlex as the third place team.

Start of MD Elite Basketball League
September 14
Location: Discovery Sports Center

EBL "Elite Basketball League" is one of the largest and fastest growing youth basketball leagues in Montgomery County. The EBL is a youth basketball league for 1st - 11th grade players, with a mission to teach the fundamentals of basketball, skill development, teamwork, discipline, the ethics of hard work, sportsmanship and leadership. The league was founded by former University of Maryland basketball player and 2002 NCAA National Champion Byron Mouton.

Session IV Basketball Clinics Begin
September 15
Location: Discovery Sports Center

Basketball players looking to continue improving their fundamentals have the chance to put in eight weeks of work leading up to the winter season with the Discovery Sports Center's Session IV Clinic from September 15 - November 11. Some of the top local basketball coaches will provide top level instruction for boys and girls ages 5-8 and 9-12, seeking to build on their dribbling, shooting, rebounding and defensive skill sets.

MD Flames Fall Basketball League Begins
September 19
Location: Discovery Sports Center

One of Maryland's premier AAU basketball programs, the Maryland Flames, start their fall season on September 19 with action at the Discovery Sports Center. The Flames program has boys and girls teams running from 2nd grade to 12th grade, in addition to an Open competition age group. They have consistently helped develop college level talent on both the boys and girls sides, and host some of the most competitive local tournaments.

The SoccerPlex offers a combination of playing surfaces with 11 Kentucky bluegrass fields, 7 Bermuda grass fields, 3 synthetic turf fields with lights and an award-winning Kentucky bluegrass stadium field with lights and permanent bleacher seating.
